Product Description
The presence of Diana Krall as producer as well as backup musician, along with some of her own regular backup musicians, may suggest that this is Barbra Streisand's "jazz" album with her voice substituted for Krall's. Certainly, it's easy to imagine Krall singing this batch of songs instead of Streisand for one of her typical jazz chart-toppers. But a better model for the disc really is the 1950s concept albums of Frank Sinatra, specifically one of the ballad albums, since the mood is low-key and the music minor-key. A piano, played either by Krall, Tamir Hendelman, Alan Broadbent, or Bill Charlap, occupies the front of the mix, sometimes joined by Robert Hurst's bass or Paulinho Da Costa's percussion, and the background is filled by an ambient soundscape of strings arranged and conducted by Johnny Mandel. Over this, Streisand sings in her characteristic manner, if with a bit more restraint than usual. 1. Here's to Life 2. In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning 3. Gentle Rain 4. If You Go Away [NE Me Quitte Pas] 5. Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most 6. Make Someone Happy 7. Where Do You Start? 8. ATime for Love 9. Here's That Rainy Day 10. Love Dance

3 out of 5 stars No One Like Barbra   August 7, 2010
W. Soule (Aylett, VA United States)
Let's see if I can put this into words. The album is nicely done and you can tell she is trying to make this a special outing. Her vocals are nice and the production is nice, the orchestrations by Mandel and Ogerman are indeed brilliant, however something is lacking. I think what it is, is Barbras signiture style. I believe you can accomplish new and wonderful things but if you spend a lifetime making a place for yourself when you go to the new and exciting place you need to take yourself along, I don't feel the Striesand stamp or charm on this one. Does that make sense? Barbra seems to have settled herself into a cozy groove in a manner which she is trying to emulate someone elses style. Yes she likes Diana Krall, and I do to, but let Diana do Diana and you do Barbara. For me the combo does not seem to work. There are however as I stated above nice moments: In The Wee Small Hours, Gentle Rain, Where Do You Start but there are also those she should have left alone, most noted for me, If You Go Away. I love the song but this version does not work. Barbra go back to being Barbra, we love you no matter what. Do things your way, how about a nice Gershwin album with Patrick Williams, oh yeah.

5 out of 5 stars Babs still has it...!   May 23, 2010

Backed by a big orch and a small quartet...the great voice shines through.
Great album both for friends and FOES. Even some Republicans might like it.

3 out of 5 stars What's it all about...Barbra!   April 29, 2010

I love Barbra Streisand so I always keep my eyes and ears open to see what she will do next. I realize now that she is almost retired and really has a great life with her husband, her dog, and her roses that she is not going to want to work too hard anymore. I am very happy for her but sad for our loss. Last year when I heard she was coming out with a jazzy type album with Diana Krall, I thought great...Bossa Nova Barbra! What we got was a nice, beautiful album with nice, beautiful ballads. No songs got passed neutral. Too safe for me! There are thousands of songs that could have been much more appropriate for Barbra Streisand. Lately, I have been listening to the new, Shirley Bassey..."The Performance" and I found myself thinking these are the songs (or at least the emotions) I wish Barbra Streisand had given me with her album. Well, Shirley is a few years older than Barbra so perhaps there is time for more and DIFFERENT types of Streisand albums. Also, let's get Ms. Streisand back in the movies. She is too good of an actress to leave at home...but of course, she is staying home because she wants to. Here's to Life, Barbra Streisand, Barbra Streisand!

5 out of 5 stars Wow - She Continues to Shine   April 14, 2010

I bought the deluxe edition based on the reviews on here and I am so glad I did. Sometimes I am in the mood for full swelling orchestra and Barbra's gorgeous voice with it. Other times,I prefer the softer, much more intimate jazz-infused songs. Either way, Barbra continues to show that she is the #1 female vocalist (if not the #1 vocalist) of all times. Her voice is rich and mature, and the song collection is just wonderful.

This is my favorite kind of music for work - and Barbra's latest album is perfection.
